Description
In the rush to develop the internet, little time or energy has been devoted to the proper recording and analysis of the history of its development, and in particular the role of women and the internet's impact on Women's Studies. One of the most exciting aspects of the Internet is its potential for the creation of communities that cut across borders and distance. Feminist rresearchers in Canada can now join any number of dedicated discussion groups (or mailing lists), can create specialized websites, teach classes, and make resources accessible, all using the Internet. Communities can be created around common interests and needs that allow women to discuss, plan, organize and create without having to be physically in the same location. Authors living on different continents can co-write books and articles without meeting in person. Researchers can conduct research without leaving their homes or offices. Activists and, well, anybody can find others of like mind to share ideas, plan events, and support each other in their struggles. Indeed, as Laurel Gilbert and Crystal Kile argue, The Internet can be a powerful tool for communication and for dissemination of information that can help women and all peoples in the struggle for self-determination. The flip side of `divide and conquer' is, of course, `network and resist with every resource available to you.' (1996, p. 5)
